Ever since I was young, my parents instilled the idea within me that academic success is very important. I’m the first generation in my family to go to college, so obviously, they did well enough to guide me into wanting to do well enough in high school to have the grades to get into NJIT. But academic success is a lot more than merely getting good grades- it’s also about the role it plays in advancing in my future. Not to mention, there will be plenty of obstacles along the way, but there will be things I will have to do in order to ensure my academic success in my future here at NJIT. In my case, when I got my schedule, I was at first quite irrit ated to see I had three hours in between classes twice a week, being that it is such a long break, and I could fit two classes into that time span. But I realized soon after, I could use my breaks between classes for studying or doing homework. And when I start something during class or during a break, more likely, and don’t get to finish, when I get home, taking that extra half an hour after I get home to finish it before taking a break really does pay off, especially when I now it’s only due in five days, and I have other homework I can do in the meantime, and I don’t have to worry about that assignment anymore. Procrastination got the best of me in middle school, and in the first half of high school, but now, I usually don’t let it get me. In short, academic life and success is more than just your grades- it’s the way you let the way you do in school and your intellect mold your future, being that you guide it in the right direction. In fact, gardening is considered to be a relaxing activity for many people. We might ask a question: Why do many choose to garden and then some choose to stop gardening? In other words, gardening isn’t only a fun way to beautify your yard; you can also produce delicious fruits and vegetables or relieve stress. Working in the garden can also bring you unexpected health benefits. For example, by watering your vegetables and tending to your garden outside, you are increasing your exposure to sunlight and fresh air, which boosts your mood and physical health. In the garden, relieving stress becomes much easier; as one steps away from everyday life and turns to nature one finds peace and relaxation. Working in the garden is also a great form of exercise without ever having to go to the gym. Then there is the planting of seeds and transplants, mulching, weeding, watering and harvesting and storing of the produce. It’s definitely a time and financial investment. Actually, gardening requires a sunny, protected area with decent soil. If we want to grow many vegetables, we have to have a house with a sunny plot of land, at least more land than people living in apartments, condos, or in wooded areas. Low paid domestic work has long been associated with certain ethnic minorities however; globalisation is intensifying such assertions by employing workers from underdeveloped countries who are willing to accept low wage work. These migrant domestic workers are also further exploited in an emotional sense. In this essay I am going to analyse and further discuss the changes that I have highlighted above, with a lot of reference to Ehrenreich and Hochschild (2003). The gendered division of labour and the gender stereotypes in respect to housework and domestic labour that we identify with today are a product of the capitalist society that we live in. Prior to the industrial revolution the home was itself a site of production for subsistence, and men and women shared domestic labour tasks, despite the fact that they had clearly defined roles both parties still made a near equal contribution to the well-being of the family (Hatt, 1997). Small scale production was also still prevalent in most working class homes at the beginning of the industrial revolution however, as consumption and production patterns changed and capitalism absorbed society and the state, the home became a site for the ‘reproduction’ of labour power (Malos, 1980). As Meillassoux (1972) argued this was the backbone of capitalist society as men were needed for their labour power, and women were encouraged to support the existing workforce; and provide and raise the future workforce (the children); by doing unpaid work in the form of ‘housework’. Malos (1980) argued that several social policies emerged in the wake of capitalism which drove women and children out of the realm of production; and the welfare state further supported that a woman’s place was in the home. Malos also recognised how unequal pay, education and employment opportunities kept women out of the labour market. The film Far from Heaven, Haynes (2002) illustrates how ideologies of femininity, masculinity and family played a significant part in shaping gender roles in the past. The woman is expected to run every single aspect of home life from morning till night, whilst the man plays no role in unpaid housework. The film highlights how advertisements and popular culture shaped the ideal family and shows the high standard of living that was the norm in those days. It also draws on the association of low paid domestic work and race; the black maid is the silent ‘help’ in the home, she does the more labour intensive domestic tasks and supports the impression of the ideal home (Bradshaw, 2003). Feminist movement in the 1960s and 70s sparked ground-breaking changes with regard to women’s employment and other social factors associated with the traditional housewife role. Although not all of these demands were met, women were still granted significantly better opportunities allowing them to more equally enter the realm of production (Malos, 1980). Though many households today are dual earning, and men are doing 240% more housework this is only 1. 7 hours per week, whilst women are doing 7% less this is still on average 6. hours per week (Ehrenreich and Hochschild, 2003). Malos (1980) argues that the struggle with the ‘second shift’ is still very much a burden for working class women, however the global middle class women can afford to pursue their career and maintain their marital home by employing a domestic cleaner. The growing demand for domestic labour is down to many economic and demographic forces however it is also a reflection of changes in society as modern couples want to avoid ‘gender and generational conflict over domestic work’ (Anderson 2003: 106). Women also want to convey the image that they can ‘do it all’, no longer is the simple housewife role socially accepted (Ehrenreich and Hochschild, 2003). The increase in demand is also an indicator of growing inequalities in society, as Ehrenreich (2003) argues in Maid to Order that 40 percent of wealth is owned by 1 percent of households, whilst the bottom 20 percent reports negative assets. These inequalities mean that more wage workers will readily accept low paid domestic work. The growing gap between rich and poor nations is also a significant factor and the growth of globalisation means that wealthy families can afford to essentially outsource labour from less developed countries, and ‘the degradation of others is readily purchased’ (Ehrenreich 2003: 85) Far from Heaven illustrates how the use of paid domestic workers is nothing new (Haynes, 2002); however, the commodification of this service is an altogether new and significant development in the area of housework today. The new corporate-run cleaning services advertise an older model of cleaning; ‘the old fashioned way’ (Ehrenreich, 2003). Ehrenreich and Hochschild (2003) argue that these companies pride themselves on their high standards of cleanliness for the home; and they achieve this by conveying associations with the traditional idea of the ideal home and ideal housewife of the fifties, as illustrated in Far from Heaven (Haynes, 2002). These companies are so successful because of the illusion that many modern women want to preserve of being able to â€Å"do it all†; by hiring a cleaner through an agency they have no personal human contact with the workers (Ehrenreich, 2003). As Ehrenreich (2003) argues; asking an independent hired housecleaners to scrub the floor on their hands and knees would be seen as degrading and unacceptable so these companies provide the service without the hassle. These cleaning agencies also ensure that homemakers do not have to rely on only one cleaner who may have other commitments or may need time off due to illness. For the householder the home is ‘home however for the paid domestic worker the home is essentially now ‘work’ and housework is their job. Domestic cleaning companies have implemented practises to ensure rder and division of labour in a Taylorist fashion (Ehrenreich, 2003). Whilst men are doing more in terms of housework, there are many women still doing the double shift especially in working class homes. However, the middle class are hiring paid domestic workers to do it for them, the home as a workplace is not a new development but the commodification of this service has led to huge changes in the area of housework today. The taylorisation of the home is one of the most significant developments. Globalisation has also led to more migrant workers than ever and resultantly the racialization of low paid domestic work. Saudi Arab imports technological machinery from Japan and other countries which enables it to be established as well-technologically equipped country (Morgan, 2010) MACRO ECONNOMIC ANALYSIS OF BOTH ECONOMIES: BALANCE OF TRADE: It refers to the difference in the VALUE of imports and the VALUE of exports when a country trades (Stanlake and Grant, 1995). SAUDI ARABIA Saudi Arabian economy reported a trade deficit of about US$ 32638.2 MILLIONS in the year 2009 in spite of being the worlds largest producer and exporter of oil with more than 90% of exports being based on it. Major imports of Saudi Arabia include equipment, machinery, food stuff and chemicals with its main trading partners being European Union, China and Japan (Source: trading economics.com, indicators, international monetary fund) Analyzing the trend we see a stable balanced of trade from the year 2000 to 2006. It then gradually increases till 2009 and falls very rapidly in 2010.we also see rapid rise from the year 2005 to 2006 and from 2008 till 2010 (McGinley, 2010). GDP GROWTH RATE: It refers to the gross domestic product that is gained by calculating the difference between the imports and the exports (Hobday, 1988). SAUDI ARABIA The economy of Saudi Arabia expanded over 0.6% last year. It is 0.31% in 2001 and continues to rise till 2009. The economy then faces a gradual decrease in the inflation rate and it falls to 3.5% near 2010, from 11.08% same year. By the end of 2010 and the starting of 2011 we see inflation again expected to rise to 5.51% (Tomlinson, 2010). UNITED ARAB EMIRATES The average inflation rate of UAE is 6.27%. The trend shows no downward trend but it continues to grow from 2003 till 2008. UMEMPLOYEMENT: The unemployment rate is defined as the number of people of the total labor force who are unemployed or/and seeking for work (Turnovsky, 1977). SAUDI ARABIA According to the last report the unemployment rate in Saudi Arabia was 10.5% in Saudi Arabia. From 1999 till 2009 Saudi Arabias unemployment rate reached to the average of 10.5%. The historical height of Saudi Arabias unemployment rate was recorded at 12%. We see the percentage of the labor force unemployed falling from the year 2007 to 2009 sharply but it fails to keep it lower and rises again to 10.5% by the end of 2010. UNITED ARAB EMIRATES The unemployment rate of UAE far exceeds of that of Saudi Arabia. It was calculated as 20.60 in 2004 which was the historical height achieved for the UAE economy according to arabian news (Tomlinson, 2010) (Source: tradingeconomics.com, Ministry of Economy) For UAE economy the unemployment rate shows an upward trend but not as rapidly and sharp as for the Saudi Arabia. SUGGESTIONS FOR IMPROVEMENT: SAUDI ARAB ECONOMY The over analysis of past trends suggest that the inflationary pressures might stay manageable and stable over the period of 2010-12 (John, 2010). This inflation will reflect the weakened interest rate .A weakened interest rate will compel people to spend more. Demand for money will rise as indicated by the monetarist view (Cateora and Graham, 2007). The increased supply of money will eventually increase the price levels as the quantity theory of money explains. There may be a fear of inflation which may exist then. Population growth will be generating some local price pressures. The economy is expected to grow by an average 3.7% in the upcoming year 2010-14. Resources reveal that the Saudi economy is expected to be greatly supported by extensive spending by the government thus absorbing a large proportion of the job market. A strong increase in investment projects by the government is also expected. There will be good domestic consumption of oil but weaker oil export due to higher o il prices (Bloomberg, 2010). Due to stronger investment projects from the government the economy will face greater injections into it which will result in falling unemployment rate and rising income levels. This will leave a favorable and positive impact on the Saudi economy in the upcoming years. But looking at the Saudi economy from the Keynes view/Classical theory of income and employment we see as the employment and income levels will rise due to injections in the economy, there will come a certain level, that aggregate demand will no longer bring any changes in the income and employment levels but prices will begin to rise which will indicate inflation in the long run (Shihab, 1996). UNITED ARAB EMIRATES The growth forecast for UAE is lowered by the IMF to less than 1% (Tomlinson, 2010). UAE economy is expected to grow 2.9% following year. The investment activity is expected to be weak as the emirate is trying to redefine its economic objectives (Bloomberg, 2010). As the UAE economy will try to reduce its rate of inflation unemployment is expected to rise as defined by the Phillips curve and his short theory of two devils that exist in the society. For the longer run, the monetarist view can also be taken into account when we will see UAE economy will try to reduce its rate of unemployment. The offered higher wages will ultimately be raising the cost of production in the long run and instantly growing inflation continuing the trend the economy showed for the pat years. This will result in falling income levels and higher rate of unemployment as the withdrawal and injection approach suggests (Menafn, 2009). Experts suggest that the above economies should try to reduce their rate if inflation especially in case of UAE. Family Nursing Diagnosis The O’Campo family is made up of a husband Danilo and his wife Lydia. They were born in the Philippines and came to the USA when Lydia was 20 and Danilo was 23 years of age. They suffered through the death of their son Emilio who died from an automobile accident at the age of 22. Although this was traumatic for them they recovered from the trauma. Now they find themselves enduring the hardships of aging. Danilo 74 has severe cardiac problems, and Lydia 69, is suffering from dementia and Alzheimer’s disease. Danilo is Lydia’s primary caregiver.One night Lydia falls at home and breaks her hip, and requires an admission to the hospital for surgery. The admission doesn’t result in improvements, and she deteriorates, and becomes more confused. Danilo also begins to deteriorate as well, because he is neglecting himself. Lydia is eventually discharged from the hospital and sent to a rehabilitation hospital for physical therapy. They start ed her on a routine and she did rather well and was sent home. Their grandniece Kristina received them and was taking care of them and their house in-between semesters for school.When Kristina left, Lydia got worse, she began to sleep walk in the middle of the night. Danilo was unable to keep with her due to his CHF, and had a heart attack, he died at the hospital. Lydia was then transferred to a nursing home, her health continued to deteriorate and she passed away shortly after her husband. Louise Erdrich Read toLive On Monday the 16th a couple of us went to see Louise Erdrich give a reading from her new novel, LaRose, out now in hardcover from HarperCollins. This novel is set in Ojibwe territory in  North Dakota and draws inspiration from a story Erdrichs mother told her about a family who shared their son  with the parents of a child theyd accidentally killed. LaRose, the young boy who is given to the wronged family in Erdrichs novel,  is the fifth of his name, the favorite child of his father, Landreaux. Hes a spiritual boy who communes with his ancestors and has a strong relationship with the young girl Maggie, who thinks hes a saint. When we saw her, Erdrich read two passages about Maggie, one a harrowing passage of violence narrowly escaped, the other a tense yet hilarious account of a  volleyball game Maggies team wins. After the reading, the audience had the opportunity to ask questions about where Erdrich draws  inspiration for  her novels  (from her rich heritage and her a ncestors), how she feels about the education system on reservations  (we need to celebrate Native American teachers and build more immersion schools where children can learn traditional Native American languages), and  what books she would recommend (works by Tracy K. Since  Wal-Mart has become the nations largest food retailer, people from all income levels are shopping there for their necessity items. They have even been working on a more upscale appearance of their stores to attract these customers. The service that Wal-Mart offers to its customers is a great advantage as well. They have a strong image that it is a friendly and helpful place to shop where people are always willing to make your experience a good one. The added incentives are the constant price rollback, as well as the store-within-a-store. A great deal of Wal-Marts success can be attributed to the fact that the company was based on identifying, knowing, and understanding what exactly customers want from a retailer. A few final strengths are linked to the public criticisms that Wal-Mart has been facing. They are paying particular close attention to environmental issues and have vowed to increase use of renewable energy, reduce waste and carry environmentally sensitive products†¦Wal-Mart will soon be selling baby clothes made using organically grown cotton and has plans to improve its truck fleet efficiency by twenty-five percent in the next three years (Two Public Relations 3). Wal-Mart has also recently been pushing for a higher minimum wage, a step that is surprising to many other retailers in the industry. Weaknesses In the eyes of some of the general public, Wal-Mart has weaknesses that affect not only their image, but the lives of other people. Some view Wal-Mart as a retailing giant that has taken over the retail industry. Because of Wal-Marts low prices and well-known name, they have been able to capture the sales of an unbelievable number of consumers, and have therefore made it extremely difficult for small retailers to survive. Ethical shoppers, those who are concerned with the well-being of small retailers, are angry at the monopolizing power Wal-Mart has been able to gain in the past few decades. Most small shops have been forced to close due to lack of sales. Some people refuse to shop at Wal-Mart because of these issues. This poor image that Wal-Mart has in some peoples eyes has taken a toll on its stock price as well. Many environmentalists are concerned with the large scale buildings that are  not sensitive to the environment. These buildings also cause a problem of traffic pollution and congestion which can damage small communities. The employees of Wal-Mart can suffer a great deal as well. Many receive only poverty-level wages and horrible health care benefits. Problems with these healthcare benefits lead to employees applying for public aid, which in turn means that taxpayers are the ones paying for Wal-Mart employees healthcare costs (Wal-Mart Storm 2). Wal-Mart has been accused of discriminating against female employees and violating child labor laws. Because of these criticisms, employee morale has been decreased as well. Wal-Mart sometimes has a disadvantage in the location of their stores. Although Wal-Mart has grown and expanded a great deal into the international market, they still do not have a large part of the European market. They are only present in the UK and their competitors are gaining in the other surrounding countries. Wal-Mart also needs to consider the consequences of placing their stores too close together. Instead of increasing the volume of products per store, they open another one. Wal-Mart has already been facing a problem with a decrease in Saturday store sales. A lack of products, as well as a decrease in the quality of them, may be attributed to this loss of sales. They have also been said to have poor presentation and marketing of products on the floor. Price deflation is a serious dilemma that Wal-Mart and many discount stores are facing as well. They often buy too much of one product and then have to put it on sale or clearance in order to turnover the merchandise. Instead of increasing sales with low priced items, Wal-Mart is actually lowering their profits. Consumers will only buy so much of a particular product, even if it is priced low. Wal-Mart has a tendency to overstock and therefore reduce gross margins when they sell products for reduced prices. Also, after seeing disappointing numbers, Wal-Mart has repeatedly said that their company would have increased earnings in the following quarter. Unfortunately, they have not been able to keep this promise. Wal-Mart has a weakness in that they promise unrealistic earnings, and then do not meet their expectations. This causes their stock to constantly waiver. Even as  the economy is rising, Wal-Marts stock is not necessarily seeing an increase. Finally, Wal-Mart can have problems with their flexibility. Since Wal-Mart sells products across many sectors, such as clothing, food, or stationary, it may not have the flexibility of some of its more focused competitors (SWOT Analysis 1). These competitors have the ability to make changes and improve on a certain product lines when the needs of their customers change. Wal-Mart, however, may have too much merchandise and not be able to focus in on sectors that need to be improved. They also might not have the available information, resources and know-how to make any changes. Opportunities Since Wal-Mart is the largest retailer in the United States, it has a very good opportunity to become the largest retailer in the world. They do not always carry a diverse selection of products, so they could expand stores and merchandise to attract more customers. An area that could especially be increased is their musical products. Wal-Mart does not carry a large quantity or mixture of musical products such as instruments, and these can be high profit items. Their image could be improved if they focused on having certain products, such as CDs and DVDs available on their release dates. Along the same lines, Wal-Mart could diversify their store types. They have been successful with implementing Neighborhood Markets, and have even tried a mall store recently. By focusing on a specific target market in a specific area, Wal-Mart could be the number one retailer for everyone. They already have the available resources to try new store types in new segments. It is also a logical step to increase and expand their current SuperCenters, which are expected to increase sales dramatically in the future. The reason it is expected to drive growth so affectively is SuperCenters are considered extremely high growth stores, more productive than supermarkets and expecting to produce $500 in sales per square foot (Wal-Mart Company Profile 8). Wal-Mart has yet to penetrate to many East and West Coast food markets that occupy the top 50 (food retailing markets) (New Competitors 1). Another great opportunity is to improve on the areas which they have been criticized. Wal-Mart has already announced a new health care plan which would increase benefits to employees. They are very concerned with child labor laws, so they have said that they will pay especially close attention to their overseas suppliers and their labor practices. Also, Wal-Mart has the opportunity to work on improving the environment. They have such a large image that any programs they support have the ability to produce tremendous results. By working on solutions to these concerns they can help improve their image and increase their market share. Wal-Mart is such a major player in the retail industry that its decisions can have an effect on the global economy, the environment and society. They have the ability to slightly decrease the price of inflation because of their low prices. Also, due to their low prices, there is an increase in wages in developing countries. For the United States, wages may be low, but in other places where manufacturing goods is cheaper, wages can actually be considered high. By offering jobs and increasing the wealth in other countries, it is possible for a substantial middle class to exist there and also increase Wal-Mart sales by having stores in those areas (Wal-Mart Storm 4. Continued international expansion is a huge strategic opportunity for Wal-Mart. There is actually more opportunity for growth in developing countries and Asian markets than there is in the United States (Variety Stores 8). Creating alliances and licensing agreements are ways to move into these market segments. Other growth opportunities include the Internet and improved supply chain management through radio-frequency identification (RFID). Threats In order to keep prices low, Wal-Mart has had to cut costs in other areas. This includes squeezing suppliers to offering their products at much lower prices. This has driven competitors to do the same, which is causing profits to plunge downward drastically. A threat to Wal-Marts image is the fact that for the few years after they open up a new store, the wages of  that county fall by three to five percent. Another threat is the rapidly growing chain of Dollar General discount stores. These stores are able to open in smaller areas where there are not enough customers to support Wal-Mart. The deep discount that is offered at Dollar stores competes greatly with Wal-Mart. The economy has a slight effect on Wal-Marts customers. They have an advantage because the do offer cheap products that appeal to people in the time of a recession. However, most of Wal-Marts customers do not directly experience most of the governments attempts to stimulate the economy. Wal-Mart must work very hard to compete in times of uncertainty. Another threat that Wal-Mart faces is brand-name recognition. Although they carry and have increased their assortment of name brand products, most consumers searching for name brand products will not look at Wal-Mart to find them. Wal-Mart lacks a direct sales force to increase sales, whereas smaller retailers are focusing more and more on this aspect therefore increasing their competition. A major threat to Wal-Mart is the areas that they are expanding into may not be easily attainable. It will be difficult for them to gain a good part of the market share of hard-line products such as home improvements. These areas have greater competition and Wal-Mart does not have a clear cost advantage. International expansion may also create slow or rough short-term growth. The international market is predicted to have excellent long-term growth success, but these earnings may not be seen in the near future. Also, Wal-Mart has huge expansion plans that are very public. If these stores do not open on time, or are subject to delays and build issues, then analysts predictions will not be met and share price may suffer (Wal-Mart Company Profile 9). On the contrary, if Wal-Mart successfully meets all of its deadlines, investors may still be hesitant to invest in their company. In the past, when retailers meet their expectations, and the economy is doing well, they tend to under perform. Also, two of Wal-Marts main product lines, apparel and food, are very slow growth sectors, and Wal-Marts dominating position in the industry may make investors believe there is little room for the company to grow. Wal-Marts image has been seriously threatened by the numerous accusations of being bad for the country (Two Public Relations 1). The documentary movies that are being produced could seriously hurt the companys sales, especially since they are being premiered right as the holiday shopping season is starting. The shopping experience some customers have at their store is also a threat to Wal-Mart. Customers are often complaining about the long checkout lines and the insufficient quality of the products that are offered. Once this idea is spread throughout a community, it is difficult to change the publics opinion. Also, RFID could possibly be a threat to Wal-Mart by ruining relationships with suppliers. This system promises to do a great deal for supply-chain management. However, there is always the possibility that technology promises more than it can actually offer. Some manufacturers of low-cost consumer products may not see the advantages of implementing such a system and not want to comply with Wal-Marts mandate for the new system. Recommendations Wal-Mart has been extremely successful in the past, and has a very promising future ahead of them. Unfortunately, there is always a negative side to success. For Wal-Mart, they are faced with opposition from people who are concerned with the little guy. The fact that Wal-Mart has the ability and resources to be such a major competitor in the retail industry scares some people. Small stores in small communities, as well as employees, target Wal-Mart because they know it is a large company with the resources to defend itself. In order to improve its image in the eyes of these people, Wal-Mart may want to address these issues head on. Wal-Mart has already taken giant strides to be seen as a more environmentally friendly organization, as well as to increase the benefits of its employees. They should continue this approach, possibly even more publicly than other retailers in the industry. Wal-Mart could even start a campaign to help the little guy. Since they have such a global impact, any issue they raise will undeniably get a great deal of attention. In a campaign of this sort, Wal-Mart could focus on promoting the  other small specialty stores in their community. They could help advertise for local shops that do not sell competing products, but complimentary ones. Instead of taking sales away from themselves, Wal-Mart could change their image to one of a company that cares about the community. Along with this, Wal-Mart should focus on their employees. Publicly giving employee benefits or rewards will increase morale as well as their image. Once Wal-Mart has invested in their image in their home country, they should also focus on increasing their market share in the international markets that they are not already involved in.
